Augmented Intelligence is an alternative conceptualization

Artificial intelligence focuses on AI’s assistive role.

Designed to enhance human intelligence, rather than replace it.

Some industry experts believe that the term artificial intelligence is too closely linked to popular culture, causing he general public to have unrealistic fears about artificial intelligenceand improbable expectations about how it will change the workplace and life in general. Researchers and marketers hope the term augmented intelligence, which has a more neutral connotation, will help people understand that AI will simply improve products and services, not replace the humans that use them.

Answering the White House’s call for input on artificial intelligence, IBM argues the technology should be designed to assist people rather than replace them.
In response to a White House request for information about how to utilize artificial intelligence(AI) for the public good, IBM argues we should focus on a different sort of AI, augmented intelligence.

Augmented Intelligence

Intelligence amplification (IA) (also referred to as cognitive augmentation and machine augmented intelligence refers to the effective use of information technology in augmenting human intelligence. The idea was first proposed in the 1950s and 1960s by cybernetics and early computer pioneers .

Context is critical. As what was once mere data evolves into actionable intelligence, the context that binds that data becomes ever more essential.

IA is sometimes contrasted with AI ( artificial intelligence), that is, the project of building a human-like intelligencein the form of an autonomous technological system such as a computer or robot. AI has encountered many fundamental obstacles, practical as well as theoretical, which for IA seem moot, as it needs technology merely as an extra support for an autonomous intelligencethat has already proven to function. Moreover, IA has a long history of success, since all forms of information technology, from the abacus to writing to the Internet, have been developed basically to extend the information processing capabilities of the human mind (see extended mind and distributed cognition ).

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

When it comes to the future of technology, it’s clear that artificial intelligence(AI) is the final frontier. However, as major tech companies have begun creating various AI-driven technologies and capabilities, they’ve started to think about AI in an entirely new way. Rather than viewing AI as systems with the goal of replicating and surpassing human intelligence, experts in the field and leading research companies like IBM understand AI is better represented and produced as “augmented intelligence,”since these systems will instead enhance and augment human capabilities. Or, better yet, intelligence augmentation (IA).
The problem with thinking about AI as we’ve come to know it, under the lens of artificial intelligence,is that at its core it’s focused on replicating and surpassing human intelligence, thus operating autonomously. If successfully done, it means artificially intelligentmachines would invade our lives in ways we could never imagine and entirely disrupt the workforce across all industries. It would mean job losses in the millions and potentially the end of our race.

Artificial intelligence is not purely “artificial.” The ideal approach amplifies human intuition with machine intelligenceto create a powerful multiplier effect. That’s augmentedintelligence.
Drive data literacy throughout your organization. Qlik’s augmentedanalytics capabilities enable users of any skill level to take command of their data through smart data preparation, analysis, and visualization capabilities.

Artificial intelligence is not purely “artificial.”
Artificial Intelligence,or AI, is the most promising and overhyped technology of our times. AI techniques such as deep learning have allowed computers to match or even beat world experts at games like chess and Go , and even board-certified doctors at diagnosing diabetic retinopathy and skin cancer .
Here, I argue that human intelligenceis better applied to helping people form goals, while AI is better applied to helping people form habits. This is not to say that an effective fully-automated AI system could not be built. But if you already have human and software resources, they can be synergistically combined to create an “AugmentedIntelligence”system for behavior change.

At IBM, they are guided by the term “augmented intelligence”rather than “artificial intelligence.” It is the critical difference between systems that enhance and scale human expertise rather than those that attempt to replicate all of human intelligence. IBM focus on building practical AI applications that assist people with well-defined tasks, and in the process, expose a range of generalized AI services on a platform to support a wide range of new applications.

Cognitive computing

IBM calls their particular approach to augmented intelligence “cognitive computing.”

Cognitive computing is a comprehensive set of capabilities based on technologies such as machine learning, reasoning and decision technologies; language, speech and vision technologies; human interface technologies; distributed and high-performance computing; and new computing architectures and devices. When purposefully integrated, these capabilities are designed to solve a wide range of practical problems, boost productivity, and foster new discoveries across many industries. This is what IBM brings to market today in the form of IBM Watson.
