Jacksonville's Andriod Market is on the Rise

With the huge amount of content available in the Android Market, it’s sometimes hard to imagine that Google’s alternative to the AppStore isn’t even close to its third birthday yet. When it was launched in late 2008, there were many skeptics who didn’t believe that Android could ever pose a real threat to Apple’s smartphone application monopoly. It impressively accumulated about 20,000 apps in the first year; not bad for a little platform that not many people knew about. By the end of 2010, it had amazingly gone on to hit the 200, 000 mark. Something of note is the fact that the last three months of the year saw the arrival of 70,000 of those applications. This impressive growth spurt is undeniable and Android continues to show no signs of slowing down.

Lots of haters of Jacksonville Android Marketing say that just because Android has an ever-growing selection of apps doesn’t mean people are actually interested in downloading them. Well, we found a great source that will tell you exactly how many applications have been downloaded in the Market. According to androlib.com, the estimated number of applications downloaded in the Android Market is 3,736,279,045 at the time of this article. That’s over half of the world’s population. And when you consider the incredible number of Android activations per day (estimated to be over 300,000), all of this information really makes sense.

While these numbers are impressive, Android unfortunately still doesn’t even come close to iPhone’s huge numbers in terms of handset market shares. Research done by icrossing indicates that in Canada, the iPhone dominates the competition with 77% of the mobile OS market share. Android and Blackberry are tied with 8% a piece. The other 7% belong to Palm, Windows Phone and others. This information is from February of 2011.

Other sources, also from last month, say that Android’s numbers are actually much more impressive. According to IDC Canada, Android had an outstanding quarter in the final three months of 2010, growing from 9% in the final quarter of 2009 to an impressive 26%.  If these numbers are the more accurate ones, it’s safe to say that Android is quickly closing the gap.

One way or another, most analysts agree: Android will literally be on top of the world by 2014. IDC predicts that by then, Android will only be behind Symbian in terms of market share numbers. It’s expected to see a 51% surge in growth and almost 25% of the world’s smartphone owners will be Android users. The iPhone will feel the burn and is expected to drop by 25%.

So if you’ve made the switch to Android, you already know why so many people will be heading our way. If you haven’t, it’s time to come over to the light side. C’mon, search your feelings, you know it to be true.
